arlene: path to family self-sufficiency
Arlene and her family moved to Yonkers from Puerto Rico in 2004. Neither Arlene nor her husband knew where they were going to live or work. The City of Yonkers referred them to Greyston’s affordable housing. Anxious about how her children would do in a new city, a new home and without employment, Arlene began to seek out resources. Arlene soon found out her children were eligible for Greyston’s Tenant After School Program, housed in the same building as their new apartment.
Arlene then sought employment training from Greyston and enrolled in the Family Child Care Training Program, which is free of charge to area residents. She completed the 8-week training course and was hired by Greyston Child Care Center to become a teacher’s assistant. Now Arlene is taking early education classes at a local community college and is thrilled to be one of Greyston’s exceptional child care center staff.
